Jesus.
The only game that ever even came close to this in my experience was the semi-broken mess that was the gorgeous Garou:MotW.
Or maybe VF4:Evolution, for having the gall of its training mode which *TAUGHT* you how to play the damn game to a medium/hard-core level. And then gave you AI opponents who used the same techniques you'd just learned how to counter.

Man, nothing is better than 3rd Strike. Everything just fits so well! If fighting games all come down to a whole bunch of RPS mind games layered on top of each other, 3rd Strike gives each moment a delicious bite just the right size. It doesn't overwhelm you, it doesn't feel slow, or rushed, or boring. There's variety, strategy, everything.

And here I was thinking that I couldn't say anything that hadn't already been said. Oh, well. Time to read the other review and see if I sound like a parrot >.

I loved the graphics of SVC Chaos, but my love for it kind of ended there. I'll concede that it's underrated, though, definitely a shit ton of a lot better than that Fighter's Evolution or whatever.

SVC Chaos is underrated guys. At the very least it's considerably more refined than the big clunky polygonal heap of recycled compost sprites that is CVS2.

Oh, and it had SNK-style Dan in it!

With every review or talk of SFThree mentioning how a small group of people 'made a difference', I'm really surprised no one has taken the time to write up a dramatic story of SFThree VS the World.

What is really interesting about Third Strike on a meta level is the slow burn it experienced in the market place. I know you already went over it to some extent, but I feel pretty confident in saying that this is the only game ever released to have peaked in popularity a good five years after it was released (at least in the US). Games like Starcraft and Counter Strike have remained exceedingly popular, but the peak came long, long ago. Third Strike actually grew on people.

I don't know how the absolutely fucking GORGEOUS look didn't lock them in immediately, myself. Yeah, the animation. But the AESTHETIC is fucking ace. The dirty levels, the rap main theme, the old-schooly whatever the fuck it is that makes up the rest of the soundtrack. The hobos and vagabonds and punks that make up the cast. Yeah, that's fucking Street Fighter right there.

I don't like it as much as, say, Hyper Fighting though. It's a looser game. Space isn't nearly as important. Movement isn't as crisp. I can't find the timing for the life of me, even after all these years. It basically plays like a 3D fighter. But man--they don't make games like this anymore. They just don't.

Thank you thank you thank you for including this game in the top 10 list.

I've been playing this game for almost a decade, and it has never once gotten old. Other fighters have cropped up, and they've been fun, but I always find myself coming back to Third Strike. It's almost TOO GOOD (in so far as every subsequent fighting game has been lacking in comparisson).

It makes me very sad that in all likelihood, there will never be another game that hits the spot like SFIII. This game is just so much better than it had to be. This game ages like a fine wine. The more you pay attention to both the gameplay and the graphics (and how the two intertwine so well!), the deeper your appreciation grows.

I've always loved the racial stereotype angle of SFII. If Capcom USA wanted to lie about the story and say that, in the future, World War III will be fought in one on one matches between representatives from every country, it would work.

At a conceptual level, I hear Ryu and Ken weren't going to be in SFIII. I kind've wish they'd gone in that direction if only to force people to give the new characters a chance.

My favorite is Hugo. I like letting someone take half my lifebar and think they're winning, and then pull out just two well placed bodyslams to win the match.
